Heliskiing Kamchatka Volcanoes, Russia

Overview

The Kamchatka peninsula is a remote and unique place located at the extreme north-east of Russia just across from Alaska. This region is one of the most picturesque places on earth and is famous for its volcanoes, geysers, breath-taking views, stunning landscapes, grizzly bears and long lasting snow season. This 8-day tour is a once in a lifetime chance to visit Kamchatka and experience its amazing landscape, plus ski its incredible powder snow & terrain. Once you land in Kamchatka, everything is arranged for you, allowing for a fun.carefree adventure!

Itinerary

On sunny days you are going to be dropped by helicopter on top of spectacular active volcanoes such as Mutnovsky (2,322m) and Vilyuchinsky (2,173m) for multiple long runs down toward the ocean shore. A typical day will involve between 6,000 and 9,000m of vertical drop.

When the helicopter can't fly the group can enjoy skiing powder in the yellow birch forest towed by snowmobiles or by snowcat.

For more information, see the Itinerary tab.

Accommodation & Food

All accommodation and meals are included in the tour. The lodgings come with an extensive hot springs pool complex. Drinks are available at bar prices.

For more information, see the Lodging tab.

Glorious powder skiing.

Guides

The group will be under the supervision of English-speaking guides, one experienced French guide and 2 local Russian guides.

Getting There

Kamchatka may be remote, but it is not too difficult for skiers to get to. That said, Kamchatka is just about as far away from Moscow as one can get and still be in Russia. At over 6,700km east of the capital, Kamchatka is actually closer to Los Angeles, but without any direct flights!

To reach Kamchatka, one will need to fly to Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky (PKC) airport, which is only a short drive north of the main heliskiing area, Snow Valley. Ensure not to mix up the Kamchatka airport (PKC) with the one in Petropavlovsk, Kazakhstan (PPK). It would suck to land in Kazakhstan if you were intent on heliskiing in Kamchatka!

Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky (PKC) can be reached via Vladivostok (VVO) and the other far-east city of Khabarovsk Novy (KHV). In turn, Vladivostok can be reached via Moscow (of course), Seoul (ICN), Shanghai (2 airports) or Hong Kong (HKG).

Travel Visa

A visa is mandatory in order to enter Russia. The tour operator will provide you with visa support to verify your forthcoming visit to Russia in order for you to apply for a visa at your closest Russian consulate. Please allow a minimum of 4 weeks for the return of your visa.

Itinerary

DAY 1: Arrival at Kamchatka.

Saturday morning. Arrival to the Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky (PKC) airport. The landscape is dominated by the 3,456m Koryaksky volcano.

Meeting at the airport and transfer by 6-wheel drive truck to the lodge. After you are settled, you'll have a lunch at the restaurant. Meet the guides, check everyone's equipment, discuss safety measures, heliski rules, and conduct a brief training session with avalanche beacons. Relaxation at the swimming pool, then evening meal and night at the hotel. If the weather is favorable, it is possible to start skiing on this first day.

DAY 2 - 7: Heliskiing

Every morning, the lead guide, depending on weather and snow conditions, decides in which areas the groups will be skiing. The goal is to get the chance to see all the natural wonders Kamchatka has to offer and discover as many different volcanoes as possible from north to south.

Departure from the lodge is around 10am. When the weather allows, on a typical day, it is possible to ski 6,000 to 9,000 vertical metres, in 5 to 7 drops. In any case, the group will take time to admire the splendid landscapes and to carefully choose the best itineraries in order to find the best possible snow, even if that involves doing some traverses to reach other snowfields.

Days 6 and 7 are reserve days which will compensate for days without heliskiing due to bad weather.

On bad weather days, snowmobiles &snowcats will be used to get guests out to the ski powder in the lower forested parts of the Kamchatka mountains.

Each night enjoy the hot springs pool, drinks from bar (not included in price) and dinner from the restaurant.

DAY 8: Departure

After a delicious breakfast you depart for the airport and your flight home.

Loading up the big MI8 helo.

Wonderful snow.

Challenging terrain.

INTERRUPTED TOURS

Any trip that has been started and then interrupted by a participant will not be reimbursed, whatever the cause. Only personal insurance can guarantee refund of partial cost for a justified cause. (see “Insurance” there under).

QUALITY

The places of accommodation have been chosen both for their strategic location and for the charm of their mountain atmosphere, however luxury cannot be promised. The organisers reserve the right to alter the programme at any time, in the aim of improving quality or making the best of prevailing conditions. Each guide has an average of 6/7 skiers per group, however on the spot it may be necessary to shift skiers in order to make the groups more homogeneous, consequently changing the size of each group.

INSURANCE

MOUNTAIN RESCUE INSURANCE is mandatory. Check your coverage for accidents, repatriation and luggage. Mastercard covers rescue off piste, when accompanied by a professional. We may help participants living in the European Union to find such an insurance

CANCELLATION INSURANCE is optional, and may be contracted only privately. Visa Premier and Gold MasterCard provided by the French banks afford cancellation insurance for tours paid by credit card. Check with your own bank.

RESPONSIBILITY

In booking with “Safari 9V”, each participant declares him/herself fully aware of the inherent risks in the practice of all mountaineering activities. A guide should not be considered as a comprehensive insurance policy. We are dealing with something more than just sports, as we are confronted with a natural environment, which we may know profoundly, but can never control. The role of a guide or instructor is to reduce risks to a minimum. Therefore, any participant who does not respect the guide’s instructions, becomes entirely responsible for any accident he may subsequently cause or be involved in and will not be able to claim against the Safari 9V guides or organisers.

Generally, “Safari 9V” cannot be held responsible for accidents which may occur during the trip, such as personal injury, loss of belongings, etc... unless professional failing can be proved. For all legal action, whatever the nationality of the participant or the place concerned, only French courts can deal with legal cases.

GENERAL CONDITIONS FOR HELI-SKIING

QUALITY OF REIMBURSEMENT

The guides will organise the daily programme to make the best of prevailing conditions. When heliskiing is not possible or not recommended by your guide, an alternative ski programme will be proposed. If the total number of flights made by your group during the week is less than the number booked, the missing flights will be reimbursed *€ / person each, less the eventual cost of extra lift passes.

*Ask us for more info as every different heliski operation has a different rate for missing flights.

RESPONSABILITY AND LIABILITY

In booking with Safari 9V, each participant is fully aware that there are inherent risks in the practice of all mountaineering activities. A guide should not be considered as a comprehensive insurance policy. We are dealing with something more than just sports, because man is confronted with a natural environment, which he may know profoundly, but can never control. The role of a guide or of an instructor is to reduce risks to a minimum. Heli-skiing involves an additional risk, which is that of the helicopter itself and the landing points which are sometimes quite narrow. Each participant is responsible for his own behaviour during pick-ups, flights and landings and is expected to respect precisely all specific instruction given prior to the flights, as well as every guide’s instruction during the helicopter manoeuvres and the skiing. The guide will instruct, warn and give orders, but cannot physically control the behaviour of the people he is guiding, therefore, any participant who does not respect his instructions, becomes entirely responsible for any accident he may subsequently cause or be involved in and will not be able to claim against the 9V guides, the organisers or the pilot.
