Mountains & Fjords of the North

A Powder Ski Tour Through the Troll Peninsula & Eyjafjörður

Just below the Arctic circle lies Iceland’s longest fjord, Eyjafjörður and the capital of northern Iceland, Akureyri. Surrounded by numerous summits, ranging from 1200 to 1500 m (4000 - 4900 ft), Eyjafjörður offers a great number of interesting descents and is an ideal location for a scenic fjord tour. Your highly experienced and knowledgeable ski guide will ensure that you get to experience the best skiing this area has to offer in a safe and fun way.

Most of your time will be spent on the west side of the fjord, on the peninsula of Tröllaskagi (Peninsula of the Trolls), but we will also visit the peaks of the east side. The high northern location of these mountains will assure a good quantity of snow. The view over the neighbouring mountains and down to the deep blue fjord is both magnificent and surreal. You will have ample opportunities to earn your turns in this breathtaking area.

In the late afternoon, local swimming pools, that sometimes look more like a spa (heated with the geothermal hot water), are a welcoming place to relax after a day of skiing from a mountain summit to the ocean. In the evenings, you will rest up in a cosy country guesthouse. Join us for some of the best alpine skiing in Iceland.

Snow, Weather & Terrain

The Troll Peninsula (Tröllaskagi in Icelandic) is a remarkable location of mountains, valleys & fjords between Skagafjörður and Eyjafjorður in northern Iceland. Its peaks reach up to 1200m, with the Kerling, the highest peak, reaching 1528m. The area is punctuated with deep valleys left behind by long-gone glaciers; now cut by rivers. It covers an area of 150 km² and holds 150 small glaciers.

Being in the far north, near-Arctic latitudes mean that the springtime sun is not strong, allowing the deep snow pack to stay fresh & cold. So there’s no need for an early start, the snow will stay good the whole day, even on the south facing aspects. A relaxed pace ensures your group has a good breakfast and will get out by 9:30am ish (depending on weather and conditions).

For most people that come ski touring in Tröllaskagi, the novelty is skiing down to the sea.. The majority of the mountains start just above sea level and rise to around 1000m: no single climb will be a big day out, allowing more runs per day. Those wanting more will usually do 'link ups '- dropping a few hundred meters off the first summit and skinning up to the next one. The terrain is perfect for as much or little as the group members want, with plenty of features mid-way where a run can end and a skinning track begin.

Ski Ability & Equipment

The Mountains & Fjords of the North ski tour is classed as 'demanding' & is only suitable for fit, strong intermediate or better skiers with previous ski-touring experience. Ski days range from 3- 8hr duration, with maximum accumulated ascent of 1500m/day depending on the fitness, skills & wishes of the group. All guests are required to bring their own ski or snowboard touring equipment (including skins & avalanche safety equipment) & know how to use it.

Small Groups

The Mountains & Fjords of the North ski tour is restricted to a minimum of 6 & maximum of 12 guests per group. Guests must be aged 18yr or older. Two guides accompany tours of 9 or more guests.

Itinerary

DAY 1 - Reykjavík - Öxnadalsheiði - Eyjafjörður

Early pick up from accommodation at 8:00. An early morning departure from Reykjavík by road 1 to the north of Iceland. You arrive at your destination, west of the Eyjafjörður fjord, in the early afternoon. The first skiing will take place that day in Öxnadalur at Kinnafjall (1104 m/3620 ft) where the group skin up before skiing down the 600 m (1300 ft) of elevation gained. The base camp on this tour is a country guesthouse.
Driving: 5 hrs
Skiing: 3 hrs
Ascent/Descent: 570 m (1900 ft)

DAY 2 - Ólafsfjörður - Dalvík - Eyjafjörður

Múlahyrna is a small peninsula situated between the villages of Dalvík and Ólafsfjörður, and here you will find today’s skiing. A gentle climb up the Gvendarskál valley is rewarded with a view to the dim blue sea of the Eyjafjörður and the North Atlantic Ocean. From here there are various possibilities for descents. Often, the group will have one run down excellent ski slopes that go all the way to the valley, before we climb up again and choose a different descent. In good snow conditions it is possible to ski down a steep open slope that faces Eyjafjörður, with the ocean directly below your skis! After a good day of skiing we can relax in the hot tubs of the swimming pool in the village of Dalvík.
Skiing: 5 - 7 hrs
Ascent/Descent: 900 - 1200 m (2900 - 3900 ft)

DAY 3 - Eyjafjörður - Kaldabakur - Grenivík - Akureyri

At the East side of the Eyjafjörður fjord a beautiful mountain named Kaldbakur rises from sea-level to an altitude of 1200 m (3900 ft). The name Kaldbakur means “Cold back” and cold it can be! This impressive mountain boasts one of Iceland’s longest descents & has abundant snow in winter & early spring. The scenery from the top is incredible. A magnificent view of nearby mountains, the fjord and into the Icelandic highlands will salute us from up on the summit. After removing your skins, you hit the slopes and ski down to the coast. On the way back you will experience a little of the local culture and history with a visit to the Turf Farm at Laufás and then the town of Akureyri, where it is possible to go for a relaxing bath at the jacuzzies of the town’s swimming pool.
Skiing: 6 - 7 hrs
Ascent/Descent: 1100 m (3500 ft)

DAY 4 - Dalvík - Eyjafjörður

The mountains over the village of Dalvík offer several good ski routes and a few of those can be found on the Sauðaneshnjúkar peaks (992 m/3250 ft). The climb to the top is easy and from there the group gets a long descent down a great couloir back down to the valley. We can also take a detour to the Jökulbakstindur further in the valley for a choice of different and possibly steep descents. On the way back we will visit a nearby microbrewery for a taste of the local brew.
Skiing: 6 - 8 hrs
Ascent/Descent: 1000 - 1500 m (3280 - 4920 ft)

DAY 5 - Eyjafjörður - Héðinsfjörður - Siglufjörður

Today the direction is further north to enjoy a couple of ski routes on the tip of the Trollaskagi peninsula. This area only became recently accessible with the opening of a new tunnel, opening up new possibilities for exciting ski routes as well. Our first destination is in the uninhabited fjord Héðinsfjorður where you will find the mountain Vatnsendahnjúkur. There the group will climb up the Möðruvallaskál for a rather steep descent that offers an impressive view over the fjord and the ocean. After a good day of skiing we head back to the guesthouse for a nice dip in the hot tub & perhaps an après ski drink or two!
Skiing: 5 - 6 hrs
Ascent/Descent: 850 m (2780 ft)

DAY 6 - Siglufjörður - Reykjavík

Before heading back south to Reykjavík the group will take advantage of the Siglufjörður ski area and use their lifts to get in position for one final ascent. Our target is Illviðrishjúkur (Bad Weather Peak) sitting to the west of the fjord Siglufjörður. The steep descent takes us right back to the vehicle. Return to Reykjavík in the late afternoon.
Skiing: 3 - 4 hrs
Ascent/Descent: 250 -700 m (820 -2300 ft)

Please note: The day to day activities are subject to change according to weather and snow condition and will not necessary be in the described order. Final decision on which routes will be skied each day is in the hands of the guide, and is based on snow conditions, avalanche danger & the wishes of the group etc. All times are approximate. There are abundant possibilities for skiing in the area. For example, the group might do some classic routes like Hesturinn (the Horse), Hestaskarðshnjúkar or Fýlaskarðshnjúkar or test your skills at some known steep descents like Rimar or Finninn (the Finn).
