Remote Peaks of Greenland

Ski Touring Adventure of a Lifetime in Arctic East Greenland

In the heart of the deep fjords of the Arctic East Greenland, surrounded by steep granite mountains, a small village called Kuummiut lies buried in snow. This Inuit hunter’s village of 350 inhabitants finds itself at the edge of one of the most impressive mountain ranges one can find on the planet. This is the ideal place to discover the still existing Inuit hunters culture at the same time as one enjoys the finest alpine touring skiing one could possibly dream about. During the trip you will discover the edge of the great “Sweitzerland“ massif & perhaps see the Northern Lights when staying a couple of nights in the Tasiilaq Mountain Hut. All transport of baggage is assured by a snowmobile, which also helps skiers with the long legs of the trip. This trip is a discovery on alpine touring skis of these magnificent mountains as well as of the great people that have survived for thousands of years in this hostile environment.

The tour starts & finishes at the airport in Reykjavik, Iceland for the group to fly together to Kulusuk in Greenland. For full details on the program, see the Itinerary tab.

Snow, Weather & Terrain

Greenland has an almost endless selection of mountainous terrain along its entire coastline. Arctic East Greenland has ample snowfall, cold temperatures & peaks up to 2,500m rising from sea level. The weather starts to settle from March as the days get longer creating perfect conditions for ski touring this remote area. A lack of 'light pollution' & clear skies at night provide opportunities to view the Northern Lights (Aurora borealis).

Accommodation & Food

All accommodation & food is included in the tour. For more information, see the Lodging tab.

Where is Kulusuk Greenland?

The tour group will fly into Kulusuk, Greenland. Kulusuk is in south-east Greenland, about 750km west of Reykjavik Iceland. Kulusuk (KUS) airport may be small, but it has international flight connections with Iceland from Reykjavik (RKV) plus domestic flight connections with the capital of Greenland, Nuuk (GOH). Note that the weather in Kulusuk is notoriously fickle, so be prepared for flight delays & cancellations.

Ski Ability & Equipment

The Remote Peaks of Greenland ski tour is classed as 'challenging to demanding' & is only suitable for fit, strong intermediate or better skiers with previous ski-touring experience. Ski days can range from 6- 9hr duration. All guests are required to bring their own ski or snowboard touring equipment (including harness, skins & avalanche safety equipment) & know how to use it. Snowmobiles are utilised to assist long transits on several days. Skiers are towed behind the snowmobiles!

All participants will be given a suggested packing guide. A sleeping bag (3-4 season rated) is a required item on the tour, & can be rented prior to departure.

Small Groups

The Remote Peaks of Greenland ski tour is restricted to a minimum of 4 & maximum of 12 guests per group. Guests must be aged 18yr or older. Two guides accompany tours of 9 - 12 guests.

Day 1: Reykjavík  - Kulusuk - Kummiiut

Depart as a group on a flight from Reykjavík Iceland to Kulusuk Greenland. In Kulusuk, the group loads baggage onto a snowmobile and starts the trip to Kuummiut (pulled by a snowmobile). After a approximately 12 km you will find a boat waiting for the group at the ice edge, from where you will sail to Kuummiut, a small village of 350 inhabitants. Arrival in Kuummiut is by the late afternoon. Most likely there will be a 'welcome committee' comprised of children from the village. Night in village hostel accommodation.

DAY 2 - The Kuummiut Mountain

Today you will climb the 1050m high mountain above Kuummiut. The group will put on the skins in front of the accommodation and start climbing until we meet a beautiful ridge up to the summit of Kuummiut Mountain. Magnificent mountain view awaits us at the top before a beautiful descent down a small glacier and via the moraine down to the Ammassalik fjord again. Night in the same accommodation as day 1.
Ascent / Descent approx. 1050 m. Skiing: 6 - 7 hours.

DAY 3 - From Kuummiut to Sweitzerland

With the help of a snowmobile the group will cross over to Tunu (the backside), traveling through a mountain valley towards the Tasiilaq Mountain Hut, situated in the southern part of the very impressive Sweitzerland mountains. You will be pulled behind snowmobiles. The group  will stop and ski between impressive steep granite summits and hanging glaciers during the journey. The transportation time to the hut varies depending on the snow conditions. In the late afternoon we arrive at the mountain hut. Night in the cosy Tasiilaq Mountain Hut.
Ascent 1000 m. / Descent 200 m. Skiing: 8 - 9 hours.

DAY 4 - Sweitzerland

Discover the Sweitzerland mountain range on skis. Climb up to a col to get a view over the huge Karale glacier tongue and discover the "back side“ of the Tripples (2233 m). Few people get to go to this remote area so prepare yourself for untouched snow and steep mountains in all directions. Night in the Tasiilaq Mountain Hut. If the weather is clear we will have a look out for the northern lights.
Ascent / Descent 700 m. Skiing: 6-7 hours.

DAY 5 - Tasiilaq Fjord

Start the day by skiing down to the Tasiilaq Fjord (800 m descent) and from there we travel with the help of a snowmobile up to a narrow valley. We climb to a small col at 500m, and depending on conditions, up to a glacier above the col to get a nice descent. We then continue back to Kuummiut for 2 nights in the village at the same hostel as previous.
Ascent 500-700 m. / Descent 1300 to 1500 m. Skiing: 8 to 9 hours.

DAY 6 - Tunu

Cross the small fjord of Tunu to get to some of the magnificent mountains towering above the village. With skins we reach a col at approx 500m from where you can enjoy the view over the islands towards the south. Descent back to Tunu and crossing over to the village. On the way home we have the option of a second climb to 500 m. Ascent (with another 500m optional) / Descent 500 to 1000m. Skiing: 6 to 7 hours.

DAY 7 - Kuummiut - Kulusuk

Travel back to Kulusuk, first with boat and then approx 12 km by skis. Arrival at Kulusuk village in the late afternoon where you will stay overnight in comfortable accommodation at the Kulusuk Hostel.

DAY 8 - Kulusuk- Reykjavík

Short exploration of Kulusuk village in the morning before traveling back to Iceland. By skis we complete the 3 km from the village to the airport where we board the flight back to Reykjavík.

Please note: The day to day activities are subject to change according to weather and snow condition and will not necessary be in the described order. Final decision on which routes will be skied each day is in the hands of the guide, and is based on snow conditions, avalanche danger & the wishes of the group etc. All times are approximate.
