Location
The base of the trip is located in Mestia, the capital of Svaneti in Georgia. The central part of the Greater Caucasus mountains will be your playground. Mestia’s infrastructure includes a basic hospital, small civil airport, two ski resorts, several museums and dozens of restaurants and cafes. The population of Mestia is 3000 citizens and only several hundreds of adventurers come in the winter season.
Georgia is located at the crossroads of Western Asia and Eastern Europe. It is easily accessible by plane, generally a 3-4-hour flight from any European country to one of Georgia's international airports (Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi) and then a transfer is needed to Mestia, right to the heart of the mesmerizing Svaneti. The views on the way to Mestia are unbelievably picturesque.
Terrain
Svaneti is the unique destination for freeride and for heliskiing. Almost untouched by civilization, the terrain is rich with steep challenging slopes, nice long cruisy runs, wide-open glaciers, & sub-alpine forests. Variety is the spice of life here! Over 1,500 square kilometers of big mountains with dots of ancient villages - this is massive terrain. Most of the runs are in the alpine zone, which starts from 2,300m altitude. The highest reachable points are at about 4,000 m.
The region has incomparable snow quality…better than you could even imagine. With the helicopter you’ll get to absolutely uninhabited and un-skied areas. 100% guarantee you’ll be the one to make the first lines.
Weather & Snow
The climate of Svaneti combines mild winter temperatures with excellent snow conditions. Temperatures rarely drop below -10° Celsius (14° Fahrenheit) during the day. The snowfalls are short, but intense.
Month by month, the weather & snow are as follows:
• January - solid snow base at all elevations, including Mestia. We start the season in January
• February - peak ski season, expect big dumps of snow and a solid snow base.
• March - the most stable month in relation to snowfalls. The weather is sunny. A great combination of spring in the valleys and mild frosty powder in the mountains.
• April - longer daylight provides an opportunity to combine morning skiing in the mountains with walking and chilling and going out in the afternoon and in the evening.
Ski Ability & Equipment
A day with Svaneti Heliskiing can cater for abilities from strong intermediates to legends! In their words: Intermediate -
for skiers and riders with wide off-piste experience; Expert - for strong skiers and riders; Legendary - for ambitious dinosaurs. Previous powder & mixed snow conditions experience is preferred! You will need your own ski or snowboard gear, but avalanche safety equipment is included in the price.
