Not what I'd hoped for

Unfortunately Mother Nature was not on our side. We had too much snow, yep that's right too much snow and it came in too quickly and was too warm creating a serious avalanche risk in the higher alpine areas. This meant that the helicopters could not go up into the high country and so we were stuck skiing trees for three days. Following in other skiers tracks through ever tightening trees is not my idea of a heli-ski trip. The snow was very deep (waist deep in places) but heavy and hard work as the weather was too warm - only just below freezing. I think I got 3-4 great turns in on deep, untracked snow in three days. Not worth it in my opinion. Having said that, I can't blame the Selkirk Tangiers outfit for the weather and I'll probably do it again some day.

Oh Yeah, STHS was good!

It's pretty obvious why I keep going back to Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing year after year. The terrain, guides and snow are the best of the best. On my recent trip last week I was blown away once again on just how big and diverse their tenure is, now mix in the fact they get about 40-60 feet of snow per year. It's a no brainer why I have been visiting STHS almost every year since 1989. Yeah, it's that good.

For starters the Hillcrest Resort is a gorgeous, comfortable place to lay your head at night. Breakfasts and dinner at the Hillcrest are awesome. After an epic day of heli-shredding the Selkirks and Monashees slip into the Hillcrest's Mountain Guides Lounge for a local brew from Mt Begbie Brewery. Lot's of great stories being told here.

From low angle riding for the first time heli skier to steeps that will make a Billy Goat cringe STHS has the terrain. One of my favorite places is ski are in the cut blocks where the stumps build up with snow creating fun diving boards.

Selkirk Tangiers

Selkirk Tangiers provides heli skiing in the Mecca of heli skiing – Revelstoke – where legends abound regarding the steep and deep.

One of the main advantages of Selkirk Tangiers is that the multi-day packages provide great value for money relative to other Canadian operators (including others with a 1:11 guide to guest ratio). Other pros include: minimal down days; a good mix of alpine and tree skiing; and great snow with quality and quantity (it scores 4.5 out of 5). Unfortunately when we went out it was neither steep nor deep because we were primarily in the alpine where the snow had been a little exposed and avalanche risk was of concern. But hey you can’t have steep and deep all the time!

One potential con is the large guest to guide ratio for the multi-day trips considering that most other Revelstoke operators have small group heli skiing, although this large ratio is pretty common across other parts of Canada (e.g. CMH etc).
