Alaska Snowboard Guides

Alaska Snowboard Guides (ASG) was formed to provide a "superior heli operation" where clients would leave their Alaskan heli skiing adventure satisfied with the amount of skiing they achieved.

By making some operational changes, ASG is now able to offer packages that allow for the ultimate flexibility ensuring guests get what they signed up for. If you have great weather and finish your package in three days you are welcome to buy additional days. Conversely, even if you have a tough weather week you should still be able to complete your package!

Each of the ASG staff members has years of experience flying in the Chugach and is a mix of professionals who both ski and snowboard. A number of the guides are equally capable on both tools!

ASG welcome groups of skiers, snowboarders and mixed groups as well.

Alaska Snowboard Guides Ski Packages

ASG claim to offer "the best value in Alaska heli skiing"! Their week-long packages include 4 hours of personal flight-time over 7 days (which equates to around 24 runs). The weeks can include an accommodation package or can be private charter. In general, ASG try to use every good weather day from the time you arrive to ensure you achieve your minimum expectations. Additional hours/vertical can be purchased if you exceed your 4 hours and you wish to do more.

Alaska Snowboard Guides Location

ASG Primary Base is Perfectly Situated to Consistently Deliver the Best Heli Skiing & Snowboarding on and near Thompson Pass
Often dubbed the “heli-highway”, located a short drive from Valdez, Alaska, Thompson Pass has long held a reputation as one of the premier heli ski and snowboard destinations in the world. With mind boggling mountains that seem to stretch forever, a thriving heli scene and an epic annual snowfall, Thompson Pass is unlike any other place on earth. Thompson Pass also holds the record for highest annual snowfall in the U.S., set in 1953 at an astonishing 974 inches. One look at the terrain from the ASG base and you’ll quickly see why Thompson Pass has long been a skiing and snowboarding mecca, and why it continues to attract many of the best skiers and snowboarders from around the world each spring. Thompson pass remains one of the most sought-after helicopter skiing locations on the planet.

ASG Bases
Their primary base is located on Thompson Pass about 35 miles outside of Valdez, Alaska. This location is ideal for the most efficient access to amazing helicopter skiing terrain as well as for missions pushing deeper into the vast range surrounding the area. As of 2014, ASG also have a secondary staging area about 17 miles from town which opens up even more terrain allowing them to select the best elevations, aspects, and terrain given the snow conditions and weather each day.

Valdez
Valdez is a quaint Alaskan town on the Price William Sound with 360 degree views of towering snow caped peaks. Even if you are camping with ASG on the pass, it’s worth checking out town and dining out for a night or more.

Travelling to Valdez
The first step in your journey is arriving in Anchorage (ANC). Plan to arrive on the Saturday before your package week begins.

From Anchorage, Valdez is accessible via a short plane ride or a scenic 5 hour drive. While a heli ski or snowboard trip may not be complicated as a K2 summit expedition, there are definitely things to consider regarding travel to and from Valdez, as well as what heli ski gear you will need to bring with you.

Flying to Anchorage
Anchorage (ANC) is one or two flights away from almost anywhere in the world.

FLY DIRECT OR CONNECT FROM ANY OF THESE AIRPORTS:
Seattle (SEA) Las Vegas (LAS) Los Angeles (LAX) Denver (DEN) Chicago (ORD) Portland (PDX) Phoenix (PHX) Minneapolis (MSP)

Flying To and From Valdez
The flight to Valdez is short 40 minute flight however, there are some very important things to consider when flying. There is only one airline that flies to and from Valdez called Ravn Air (Formerly Era Aviation). Weather in Alaska can change quickly and without warning. This is yet another reason that ASG strongly encourage you to purchase Travel Insurance. Most major airlines will book you a flight on Ravn to Valdez however you may also book directly through Ravn.

Give Yourself Time:
The last Ravn flight to Valdez (VDZ) boards at 4:45pm. Double check itineraries before booking to make sure you don’t have to spend the night in Anchorage (unless you want to). Ravn flights depart from gates outside security. Depending on how you book your flight, you may need to pick up and re-check your bags at the Ravn check in. Make sure you have enough time (at least 1 hour 15 minutes) just in case.

Book a Late Return Flight:
The weather in Valdez grounds planes several times each winter. To avoid a missed flight in Anchorage book your return flight from ANC late as possible. A red-eye is the safest bet. The late flight gives you plenty of time to deal with cancellation and arrange for alternative transportation to Anchorage if need be.

Terrain, Weather & Ability

The terrain found in the Chugach mountains is truly unique and utterly amazing. While some of the steepest and sickest lines can and be found here, it has something for everyone. From 50 degree steeps to 5,000 vertical foot, and 30 degree glacial powder runs a half mile wide!

Contrary to what you may believe, you do not have to ski or ride like a professional athlete to enjoy the big mountains and powder of the Chugach. While they recommend you arrive in fairly good physical condition and confidence in your abilities, the many terrain options mean that you can ski anything from steep ramps to more mellow grades with big powder fields. There really is something for everyone.

Due to its close proximity to the ocean, temperatures in Valdez are relatively mild compared to inland Alaska. Average daily temperature during the season is about 20 degrees (-7 C). This can vary, and temperatures can range from as warm as 40 (4 C) to as cold as 0 degrees (-18 C). Valdez receives more snow than almost any other place in the world. Because of this, snowstorms can last up to a few days. This is is why we strongly encourage you to come for at least a week. This will give you the best chance for a weather window for flying.

Ripping a 45 deg slope...

..or something a little bit steeper...

..or maybe something mellower.

ASG Terms & Conditions

Purchasing Travel Insurance

Almost all travel insurance covers cancellations, medical expenses, evacuations, losses or delays, and 24/7 assistance. There is absolutely no reason not to purchase a policy given the extensive coverage and affordability.

While there are many similar options available, our current recommendation is TravelGuard which allows you to choose the coverages you want/need.

What does Travel Insurance cover?

Cancelled Trips

Due to the high overhead associated with heli skiing we do not offer any refunds for cancelations. Travel insurance will reimburse you this cost including any expenses you incurred as part of planning the trip (e.g. airfare cancelation / change fees).

Travel insurance further covers cancelation of your trip due to sickness, injury or death, flight cancelations, jury duty and if you are laid-off or required to work. It will also cover the lost portion of your week if for any reason you have to return home due to an emergency.

Emergency Evacuation
If something happens to you while in the field, there is no other way to obtain medical assistance other than using the helicopter which will be very, very expensive especially if we need to fly you directly to the Valdez Hospital. If you need to be transported to Anchorage, or even worse back to the lower 48 in a medically equipped aircraft this cost can easily exceeded $50,000 or more.

Injury / Sickness
If you are visiting us from another country, your heath insurance at home may not cover any injury or sickness that could occur during your trip. Travel insurance will.

Lost luggage, delayed luggage & delayed flights
If your arrival is delayed and you miss a fly day with us, we cannot refund you for this lost day and the flight time your group uses will be deducted from your package.

ASG can’t emphasize this point enough. There is no reason not to buy Travel Insurance for your Alaska Heli trip!
