Powderhorn doesn't have much notoriety in the ski world but the glade skiing alone is worth making a trip on a good powder day.
The new Flatop Flyer chair also helps make getting laps a lot quicker.
Unfortunately Powderhorn can suffer in bad winters and has a short operating schedule compared to other ski areas nearby (Mid December-March).

This place is awesome. We drive from Tucson/Phoenix AZ every year to stay right off the ski resort. There is plenty of snow. 37ft plus a year. We haul the snowmobiles up and glide on wonderful groomed trails on the mesa too. Cross country, sledding, etc... The resort is what we love being intermediate level from the kids advancing and the older ones NOT wanting to break a leg. You are not sliding on crappy hardened ice but powder snow. It's really a joy. Recommend if traveling from AZ, Utah, New Mexico check the red mountain pass being open or take the easier route from Grand Junction.

I had a season pass last year. The snow was good, but the main lift was down for half the day almost every day.

It is nice that it isn't crowded but it is a small mountain and you can cover it and get a little bored of it quickly. The value is ok.

Great midweek resort. I feel the two lifts are horrible as they are slow (14 minutes each) and the main lift services everyone from beginner to expert so it can stop often.

This is the only drawback to the area unless you want nightlife. Great tree and ungroomed skiing without crowds. Powder when available 4 to 6 times a season is very light and skiable.

Best snow in Colorado last year.

A Little Gem

Powderhorn is a ski resort that international travellers are unlikely to visit, and it’s generally only frequented by the locals and Texans who can take a direct flight into Grand Junction. Anyone else looking for a cheap family ski destination may be missing out, because Powderhorn comes up trumps in that domain. Everything is inexpensive, particularly when you compare it to the high profile Colorado ski resorts.

The ski hill is very family friendly. There’s only one base area and the terrain is small enough that you won’t lose any family members. The downside is that some riders (strong intermediate and above) might get bored after about 2-3 days.

Powderhounds may want to hit up Powderhorn as part of a Colorado road trip. A powder day will provide lots of tree skiing fun. There are no major steeps, but the absence of crowds is a huge bonus.

Staff are over the top friendly and go out of their way to help. Another pro of the ski area is the unique views across the canyon, particularly in the late afternoon when the sun shines on the red rocks.

Powderhorn has limited on-mountain accommodation and there’s very little to do in the evenings. Grand Junction has a little more evening action, but the downside of staying there is the daily commute to the ski area.
