Accommodation
For those
skiing at Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort, there are many options for lodging that broadly fall into three locations: on-mountain at Durango Mountain Resort; near the ski resort; and in the town of Durango.
Purgatory / Durango Mountain Resort Lodgings
The number of accommodations available at the ski resort has grown over recent years. Lodgings include a hotel, hotel style condominiums, town homes and vacation rentals. Many of the lodgings are ski-in ski-out or close to it, whilst some of the new properties on Sheol Street require a short walk before clicking in. See the

Staying at the ski resort obviously offers the great convenience of being able to wake up, have breakfast and then start sliding. One downside of staying on-mountain is that the dining and nightlife options are very limited, but many of the families that stay at DMR are happy to cook at home and stay in for the night. Budget will also need to not be a concern, as the accommodation is not easy on the pocket.
Hotel accommodation is available at the Purgatory Village Hotel in deluxe king rooms, studios or multi-room suites. Popular and well located vacation rentals include the Alpenglow Townhomes and Elk Point Townhomes.
The pièce de résistance of accommodation at DMR is the new Purgatory Lodge which opened in December 2008. This property is luxurious and ski-in ski-out. In addition to convenient access to the slopes, restaurants, bars and shops, guests enjoy access to the pool, hot-tub and cabana bar that all afford gorgeous views of the ski area. The accommodations range in size from 2 to 4 bedrooms condominiums. As a guide to rates, the nightly rates during the standard winter season are $580 per night for a two bedroom condo (for up to 6), and $718 for a 4 bedroom condo (up to 8 persons) – 2009-2010 rates.
Hotels and Condos Near the Ski Resort
Much better accommodation rates can be found at hotels, lodges and condos within a few miles of the ski area.
The
Silverpick Lodge is located one mile south of the ski resort and a great pick for accommodation. Lodge accommodation is available within a choice of 13 rooms, each with a private bathroom. The rooms vary from small rooms to accommodate two persons for $125 a night in mid season, to a large room that accommodates up to 8 people for $175 during the standard season. All rooms are nicely decorated and the bathrooms are beautifully appointed. The lodge has great facilities including a breakfast room, games room, and outdoor hot tubs, and the highlight is the fabulously stupendous food available at the Sow’s Ear restaurant.
The Silverpick also has great condos that are fully decked out with all the mod cons. The condominiums are very well priced, especially when compared to those at Durango Mountain Resort. One bedroom condos are $149 per night in mid-season whilst 3 bedroom townhomes are $275 per night in mid season (2009-10 rates).
The Cascade Village is located two miles north of the ski resort where there are various resort accommodations available including hotel rooms and condominiums.
Durango Hotels
The town of Durango has an abundance of accommodation. A huge advantage of staying in Durango is that the hotels are very reasonably priced, and some motels will suit even the thriftiest of skiers.
In downtown Durango examples of hotels are the historic Strater Hotel (699 Main Ave), a delightful establishment, the General Palmer Hotel (567 Main Avenue) and The Rochester Hotel. These Durango hotels have great access to the fabulous restaurants and bars in and around Main Avenue.
On north Main Avenue (state highway 789) there are a string of economical hotels and motels such as Econo Lodge Inn & Suites, Days End, Abbey Inn, Quality Inn, Travelodge, and Best Western Mountain Shadows. The hotels and motels will fight hard for your business with entertaining signs out the front to attract the passersby. Motel rooms go for as little as $25 a night and the chances of needing a reservation are slim.
Durango bed and breakfast properties are also available downtown. Examples of well regarded B&Bs are the Leland House Bed and Breakfast and Gable House Bed and Breakfast.
