A visit to Penguin Island was a highlight

After reading a novel some years ago about a fugitive who’d gone to Ushuaia to hide in what he called the “arse end of the world”, I’d thought Ushuaia would be a small, depressing and backward town. I was pleasantly surprised that Ushuaia was large, modern, vibrant, and bustling with tourists. And a small surprise was that Ushuaia was somewhat expensive (relative to other Argentinian towns) despite it being a so-called tax free haven.

We enjoyed checking out various restaurants around Ushuaia, particularly some of the amazing seafood cuisine. Unfortunately we also experienced various eateries that offered substandard food where stale bread was the norm.

We had a great time in Ushuaia enjoying activities such as backcountry skiing at Glacier Martial, hiking around the national park, and checking out the end of the world museum. The highlight was a catamaran cruise along the Beagle Channel that included a visit to Penguin Island where we got to check out the amusing penguin antics of the Gentoo and Magellanic penguins. There was also a solitary king penguin – think he might have been a bit lost?!
