Pow Pow Japan Tour

This 8 day sample itinerary is fully customiseable from 5 nights to 14 nights for private groups of up to 9 between early January and mid April (subject to availability).

Your tour host (Mr Kobayashi) was born and raised in Niigata and has been skiing since he was 7 years old and is a qualified ski instructor. He is very passionate about skiing and has hit probable every possible run there is to offer in Tokomachi, Myoko and Itoigawa. He speaks good English and he has spent time working abroad and actively helps the English speaking community within the local city.

This tour offers far more than just skiing (although the main focus of the tour is still the skiing) as you will stay in authentic Japanese Ryokans, Hotels & Inn's, graze on authentic Japanese cuisine & soak in therapeutic hot springs..... by having a local Japanese host you will visit places that most tourists never get to go as he will fill any communication gaps with local service providers for you.

This is not a guided ski tour, your host will transport you around, show you and/or steer you in the direction of the best places to eat and things to visit/see and will manage all of your accommodations. You will have the autonomy to explore each ski area as you wish. There is however an option to upgrade to have an on-mountain ski guide if you to show you the various ski areas.

Your private transportation will be in a single Toyota Hi Ace 10-seater mini van with roof racks to carry your gear.

Ski Areas VisitedWhilst this itinerary has some flexibility, it will primarily follow the path of the sample itinerary. The total number of nights and the number of nights at each location may vary and the resorts visited and daily activities might vary.

In essence, the resorts you would have access to from Myoko Kogen would include AkakuraSuginohara & Ikenotaira Onsen and potential day trips to nearby Lotte Arai & Tangram/Madarao.
From Takada in Joetsu city you can hit Seki Onsen and from Itoigawa you can visit Chamant Hiuchi ski area (or there is also the option of Shallam Ski Area which is a favourite for powder days or Seaside Valley ski area which is more suited to on-piste skiers & boarders)

Accommodation

The tour includes quality 3 - 4 star Japanese hotel accommodation. The following hotels are the first choice however your accommodation will ultimately be determined by availability but you can assume the standard will be similar to these hotels if they are not available. In general you will be booked into  Western-style rooms with en suite bathrooms (when & where available).

Akakura (Myoko Kogen)

Hotel Taiko (4 star)
Hotel Taiko is a beautiful Japanese style hotel located in the upper village of Akakura Onsen within easy walking distance of the slopes.

Choose from large Japanese or western style rooms (with Japanese décor), all with ensuite bathrooms.

The onsens are gorgeous and the outdoor onsens offer particularly lovely views.

Ryokan Okayama (3 star)
Ryokan Okayama is a traditional Japanese Ryokan offering indoor & outdoor hot springs (plus a private hot spring available for booking) and is located in the Akakura Kanko area about 10 mins walk to the lifts.

Rooms are Japanese or western-style and some have private en suites whilst others use the shared bathroom/onsen facilities.

The restaurant serves authentic Japanese multi-course dinners in the evenings and Japanese set-menu for breakfast.

Tadaka Area

Takada Terminal Hotel (3-star)
The Takada Terminal hotel is located in central Takada near the JR station where you will find many restaurants & bars.

The hotel has basic western-style rooms all with private en suites.

The in-house restaurant specialises in local sake wine & seafood

Itoigawa Area

Gongensou
With 5 onsens within the hotel, authentic Japanese rooms and easy access to Charmant Hiuchi and Itoigawa Sea Side ski park, it is an ideal location for a Japan ski adventure.

This hotel will offer you a wonderful experience of traditional Japanese lodgings, meals and company away from tourist trap bling.

While the staff may have limited English they are friendly and Pow Pow Japan will organizes all details of your stay and can help mediate any needs a customer may have.

Sample Itinerary

This itinerary is a sample of how a 7-night/8-day tour would operate however is customizeable and may also alter at the time subject to accessing the best weather & snow conditions.

Day 1 (Arrival Day)
This tour starts at Myoko station where you will be picked up by your Japanese host and driven (approx 15 mins) to your hotel at Akakura where you will spend the next 3 nights.

If anyone needs ski or snowboard gear, your host will take you to the rental shop where you will get kitted out.

Depending on the time left in the day, you may head out for the afternoon skiing/boarding at Akakura or maybe you will be ready to partake in your first onsen (which is optional but could become a daily ritual on this tour!).

In the evening you will meet with your host (which may be over dinner) to discuss options for skiing/boarding the following day which will be determined based on your groups ability, the likely snow conditions and weather forecast.

Your host will book & take you to a favourite local restaurant (this is where having a Japanese speaking host is very handy!!)

Day 2 & 3 (Ski Days)
After breakfast you will be driven to your ski area of choice (which could be one of the Myoko Kogen ski areas including Seki Onsen, Lotte Arai & Tangram/Madarao) by your host.

You have the whole day to explore the ski area, have lunch at your own leisure and in the afternoon your host will pick you up at the agreed time.

En-route back to the hotel you may stop in at an onsen or you may do this back in Akakura.

Again your host will organise a restaurant for your (or you can do your own thing) and the following day's destination will be discussed & decided.

Day 4 (Snowmobile & City Bars)
In the morning after breakfast, the group will be driven to Suginohara Ski area for a Snowmobile tour (this is optional and an additional cost to the prices shown). Here you will have lessons on how to ride a snowmobile, and then get to have a jaunt through a tree course.

After your snowmobile tour you will be free to explore the Suginohara ski area before returning any rented gear to the shop and pack up your luggage from the hotel ready for the next adventure.

That evening, your host will drive you to Takada in Joetsu city where you will get settled in to your hotel (where you will stay for the next 2 nights).

Takada is an ordinary rural town at first glance, however it is a place where you can enjoy a most authentic Japanese experience. Although it is not a highly commercialized tourist hub, there are more than 150 local restaurants, bars, karaoke stores and game centers with a laid-back ambience and bustling with regional hospitality. There is very little English spoken in this town so your Japanese host will be able to guide you to all of the best places.

Once settled you will join your host for dinner and enjoy the Takada night life.

Day 5 (Cultural Day &/or Ski Day)
Your group will have the option to relax in Joetsu city for the day where you can go shopping and take part in cultural experiences such as calligraphy painting, kimono, or tea ceremony; or if you are keen to ski/snowboard, you could do a full-day or half-day at nearby Seki Onsen. Best to hit Seki in the morning if you want to get the best of the powder!

In the evening you have a choice of many restaurants and bars and your host will be able to recommend some favourites.

Day 6 (Travel to Itoigawa City & Ski/Board )

Today you will head from your hotel in Takada to Itoigawa city; the city of jade, sea and snow.

The city is small with only 45,000 residents and is located right on the Sea of Japan coast and is famous for its jade which can be found on its beaches & its primary industry is fishing. Not much English is spoken in this town so having a Japanese host is a real benefit!!

After settling into your hotel in Itoigawa city (where you will stay for the next 2 nights) and renting gear if required, you will be driven to Chamant Hiuchi ski area (or there is also the option of Shallam Ski Area which is a favourite for powder days or Seaside Valley ski area which is more suited to on-piste skiers & boarders)

After skiing you will be taken to an onsen and then out for dinner. While not as big as Takada, Itoigawa has many interesting bars and it is famous for is crab dishes and local sake!

Day 7 (Ski / Snowboard)
Your last day of skiing/boarding will be a full-day at Charmant Hiuchi ski area (or one of the other nearby ski ares).

After a full day son the slopes, your host will take you to one last onsen before your last dinner on the tour.

Day 8 (Departure Day)
Your host will help you return any rented gear and take you to Itoigawa station where your will head home or onwards to your next adventure
