    Hokkaido’s Iconic Volcanoes

This backcountry guided ski/ split board tour heads to both ends of Hokkaido’s volcanic ranges. On the southern end of Hokkaido you will ascend Mt Yotei, often referred to as Ezo Fuiji or the Mount Fuiji of Hokkaido due to its iconic cone shape. Mt Rishiri is way up north off the NW coast of Hokkaido, on Rishiri Island where those famous weather patterns from Siberia bring loads of powder.

The best time to go backcountry skiing in Rishiri is probably late February to early March, before the powder diminishes. In late winter and early spring there’s a slightly higher chance of clear days, although the main weather inhibitor to summiting either volcano is the wind, and the time of year doesn’t impact on that too much. Rishiri is renowned for the often-windy conditions!

The program is focused on ascending Hokkaido’s premier volcanoes. The itinerary will be left open to allow planning the ascents in the best conditions. If time permits we will head to Asahidake to ascend Hokkaido’s largest peak or to Tokachidake for its stunning views and quality of powder.

AbilityThis tour is primarily about ski touring & split-board touring so you should be fit and have some touring experience and be an advanced+ skier/boarder.

    Program Itinerary

    Day 1
Meet in Furano, Central Hokkaido to prepare for the early morning departure. After checking in to the hotel, you will have dinner at a traditional Japanese restaurant where your guides will discuss the trip logistics.

    Day 2
Travel south to Otaru. Stay in the old port city of Otaru. The city has European influences in its architecture blended with Japanese aesthetics. Feast on fresh seafood and check out the local brewery. Ski locally at Sapporo Kokusai or Kiroro to warm the legs up for the coming days of skiing.

    Day 3 and 4
Over the next 2 days get an early start and focus on ascending Mount Yotei. Yotei at 1,898m has the longest vertical ski descent in Hokkaido. The mountain rises majestically, but due to its proximity to the sea the weather can come in fast.

    Day 5
Travel day to the far north of Hokkaido. Russian influences are obvious due to the town’s close proximity to the Russian Sakhalin Peninsula. Take the ferry to the Island of Rishiri, while viewing the remarkable sight of the volcano protruding from the ocean on the ferry crossing.

    Day 6
Over the next three days you will access the mountain's various flanks. When there is a clear day, you will ski from the summit and on low visibility days the group will explore the sheltered tree-line flanks. Finish the day feasting on the local delicacies.

    Day 7
Ski, explore, feast then relax in the onsen.

    Day 8
Ski, explore, feast then relax in the onsen.

    Day 9

Morning return ferry. On the return journey you will stop at a local resort for some sidecountry turns. Or return on day 8 if weather is permitting & travel to Asahidake.

    Day 10
    Airport transfer from Furano.
