We haven’t done this exact tour but we’ve undertaken a customized tour with Hokkaido Powder Guides that has a lot of similarities to this tour.

We spent a very dreamy 8 days with the Hokkaido Powder Guides in Central Hokkaido, exploring ski areas that typically offer the best snow in the world and that we rate very highly as destinations for powder hounds.

We loved that this tour provided great riding variety, sampling multiple ski areas, using the lifts sometimes and earning our turns at other times. The weather was really stormy when we were at Tokachidake, and the guides were able to flex things around to find good spots for riding on inclement days. Of course that meant there was plenty of fresh snow!

We had two different guides during the trip which were both fantastic. Chuck was very unassuming yet very amusing, and whilst his extensive knowledge was really important out in the field, his sense of fun really made the trip. Noria was just lovely and very helpful, and I’ve never seen someone dig a snow pit with so much enthusiasm. As there are no regulations in Japan regarding guiding, there are some companies that offer unqualified guides, but with HPG we knew we were in very good hands.

The accommodation was varied and very good. We started at the classic ye olde Grand Hotel in Asahikawa, which was lovely. The pension at Furano was really cute, and the hosts were just gorgeous.

All the varied opportunities to sample the food were another highlight of the trip. Asahikawa has an amazing selection of restaurants, the food at Tokachidake was very traditional, and there were more yummies on offer at Furano.

If you love powder (and Japanese food!), we can’t recommend this tour enough. It was awesome…. when can I go again?!
