Fire & Snow Tour

The Fire and Snow Tour takes in the Nozawa Onsen fire festival and great ski areas around the Niigata and Nagano regions. Chase the powder in the off-piste and lift-accessed side country areas. Stay in Japanese inns with traditional tatami/futon rooms.

Hokkaido Mountain Experience (HME) has been operating in Japan for 10 winters and is based in Niseko & now also in Nozawa Onsen. HME provides professional private ski and snowboard lessons, guided resort tours, guided backcountry tours, and guided custom tours in Japan.

Last year one of the co-owners did some nitty-gritty exploring on the island of Honshu. Armed with some trusty knowledge, recommendations, 7 great friends and a particular set of skills, a trial run was undertaken in a 10-seat van which included 2 ferry rides, 17 resorts, 1000+ km, an abundant amount of fresh powder turns, and lots of smiles.

The result was the birth of two incredible tours: this one (the Fire & Snow Tour) and the Tohoku Yuki Tour.

Group Type The tour is for mixed groups so you can join as a solo traveler, a couple or small group. There is a minimum of 4 guests required for the tour to run up to a maximum of 7.

LocationsThe tour covers some of the best ski areas in the Nagano & Niigata area including Nozawa Onsen, Madarao, Tangram Circus, Myoko Kogen, Lotte Arai, Shiga Kogen & Togari Onsen.

AbilityYou should be as a minimum, a strong-intermediate (off-piste) skier or rider that is very comfortable and fluid in well spaced trees and off piste terrain.

TerrainThe terrain for this tour is resort on/off-piste and lift-accessed sidecountry and backcountry.

Avalanche safety equipment is essential and must be used and is available to rent for the entire tour.

You will be trained on how to operate a transceiver, probe & shovel at the beginning of the week and this will be checked daily.

Guiding & HostingThe tour will have 1 guide for up to 6 guests and will have a tail guide if there are 7 guests on the tour.

Guides hold the following qualifications: ARM Level 5; Stage 1 Avalanche; Level 3 Snowboard Instructor and Trainer level 2 Ski Instructor; plus they have Wilderness First Aid.

The guides also have many years of experience driving in blizzard conditions in Japan and hold Heavy Vehicle License and a Hazardous Area Authority.

Itinerary

Day 1 (Arrival Day) Ilyama Station:
Make your way from Tokyo via Shinkansen from Ueno to Ilyama Station and be picked up by your guide in a private 10 seat 4WD van and taken to Nozawa Onsen for check-in at the Lodge Ueno.

Please plan to arrive after 2 pm but before 8 pm (if not possible please let HME know in advance).

Settle in, organise your gear and be ready for the next days ahead. Grab a quick bite downtown & explore the magnificent village of Nozawa Onsen or catch up on some rest.

Day 2 (Nozawa Onsen Warm-up Day)
Head up to the mountain from the Nagasaka Gondola Station from 8:30 am. You will be shown around Nozawa Onsen's upper mountain areas by your guide, grab some lunch on the mountain and make your way around the best runs whilst getting the body and mind right for the days ahead.

Afternoon continue skiing and riding with your guide for more adventure or head down for an onsen in the village to relax your muscles.

Meet up at the Stay Bar for Welcome Drinks at 5 pm.

Day 3 (Nozawa Onsen)
Depending on the snow quality, you will explore the backside of the mountain with your guide. Lunch on the mountain and finish at NEO for apres then onsen, pack the van and get ready for our road trip to Myoko Kogen in the early morning via Madarao.

Day 4 (Madarao - MADaPOW)
You are up early and in the van for the drive over to Madarao to tear up the fresh powder of Madapow and Tangram Circus on the backside. Plentiful tree skiing and riding to be enjoyed here. Lunch on the hill then more powder in the afternoon.

You will then head to Myoko and check-in for the next 2 nights.

Dinner at the lodge.

Day 5 (Myoko Kogen - Powder Mecca)
After breakfast at the lodge, it’s all about the pow today. Suginohara is home to the second longest run in Japan and it has some great sidecountry trees.

This evening the van will be packed ready for an early start tomorrow.

Dinner at the lodge.

Day 6 (Lotte Arai - Old Resort Revived and Revamped)
After an early breakfast, you will check out and head to Lotte Arai, a resort that has gained some attention from our friends at Powderhounds and for good reason. Big mountain, serious terrain, great infrastructure and an awesome onsen experience.

After a full day of skiing, you will be driven down to Yudanaka at the base of the Shiga Kogen range.

Check in to Zen Hostel and meet the lovely Maya, enjoy a dinner at D-Line around the corner and get ready for more powder skiing tomorrow.

Day 7 (Shiga Kogen)
Breakfast will be at 7 am at Zen Hostel and then it's off to Okushiga Kogen or Yakebitaiyama for some side country adventures and plentiful powder runs with no crowds. Lunch on the mountain and in the afternoon head back to the Yudanaka village for an onsen.

For dinner try Hakko Beer with its great food as well as beer from Shiga Kogen Brewery.

Day 8 (Shiga Kogen)
Ditto...breakfast will be at 7am sharp. Okushiga Kogen or Yakebitaiyama will be the plan. A visit to the famous Snow Monkeys will be in the afternoon's plan. Bring your camera and your warm walking shoes.

Day 9 (Shiga Kogen/ Half Day or Zenkoji Temple Visit)
Group decision made on this day based on snow conditions and physical condition. Maybe a day of skiing/riding or a day of cultural activities & sightseeing.

This is the last night in Yudanaka so it's time to pack the van, dinner and in the pit.

Day 10 (Togari Onsen)

Today you will explore the smaller resort of Togari on the way to Nozawa for the famous Fire Festival.

Check in to Ueno and settle in, onsen or a spa, farewell drinks and dinner.

Day 11 (Nozawa Onsen)
Get out and about early to get the fresh tracks at Nozawa Onsen and then enjoy arguably what is one of the best winter festivals in Japan; the DOSOJIN MATSURI (Fire Festival).

Hint : Wear a jacket or clothes you don’t mind getting all smoky.

DAY 12 (DEPARTURE DAY - Time to Pack-Up - Sad Face)
Check out by 10 am and your trusty guide will load you into the van to escort you to Ilyama Station for your Shinkansen back to Tokyo (or onwards if you are lucky enough to be doing another tour).
