Alps to Coast Package (Hakuba & Myoko) - New for 2017!

The Hakuba Alps are without doubt the most impressive mountain range in Japan. Only a very tiny number of people who visit the area ever venture into the backcountry; and that's because it is very steep and dangerous for those without local knowledge and experience.

The Myoko Kogen area (which also potentially includes nearby resorts like Madarao/Tangram & Togakushi) is renowned for its abundant snow falls and fabulous tree skiing.

This lift-accessed backcountry tour incorporates all of these amazing locations along with a cultural day on the travel day in the middle of the tour.

Goodguides have over 10 years experience of skiing in central Japan giving them an intimate knowledge of the local mountains, weather patterns and local culture. Owner and operator Jerry Williams has fluency in the Japanese language and his love of Japanese culture will ensure you get well rounded trip with the absolute best in both skiing and culture.

All guides are professionally trained and qualified and are in the field everyday and know the conditions and terrain inside out.

The guides also have an extensive network in the local community enabling them to access local knowledge and information from the surrounding snow community.

Ability & FitnessThese tour is aimed at skiers and riders who are advanced to expert. In addition, these tours involve a lot of up-hill hiking on skis, split board or snow shoes so you will need to have a very good level of fitness.

Equipment RequiredYou will have avalanche safety gear supplied as part of the package, however you will also need touring gear which could be skis with touring bindings & skins, a split board with skins and/or snow shoes.

These tours can also be customised to your dates and group (subject to availability). Enquire here for a custom quote>>

Advanced bookings are essential as these tours book out well ahead of time.

Accommodation

Hakuba Lodging
For the Hakuba part of the trip you will stay at the Meteor Log Hotel which is a 7 bedroom Canadian log-style chalet which sleeps up to 22 guests.

It is located in the Echo Land village and is an easy walk to restaurants & bars.

The hotel/chalet provides lovely communal spaces and a self-cater kitchen so you can cook your own meals if you prefer.

All rooms have private en suite bathrooms (with bath tub) and include soap, shampoo, toothbrush, hair dryer and towels.

There is a common computer for guest use and wifi is available. There are also on-site laundry facilities.

A daily breakfast is provided as part of the package and you can self-cater your evening meals or the lodge hosts can provide evening meals for an extra fee.

The lodge also offers a free shuttle service to the slopes, however you wont require this as you have your own private shuttle service for the duration of the tour.

Myoko Lodging
The lodging for the Myoko Kogen part of the trip is staying at the Kougakuro Hotel which is ideally located at the top of the main village, 2 minutes walk to restaurants & bars and about 5 minutes walk to the nearest lifts.

The hotel still has a traditional feel to it yet it has evolved over the last few years to cater well to westerners. It has a basic indoor and outdoor onsen with natural hot springs and it has a great communal lounge area with a fireplace and bar.

All rooms are Japanese-style (futons on the tatami flooring) and have a wash basin and a private toilet. Some of the rooms have a shower but most people tend to use the Japanese bathhouse (onsen) each day to wash. The rooms also have a small fridge and a TV (that only has Japanese stations) and a table to sit at.

The hotel does the most amazing Western buffet breakfast; you will need to do a lot of walking to keep the kilos off! And the night-time restaurant offers traditional Kaiseki (Japanese multi-course) and fresh Crab/Seafood cuisine. One or both of these meals is a must-do!

The hotel has free wifi throughout, drinks vending machines, a gift shop, a drying room, secure ski storage area and laundry facilities.

Itinerary

This tour starts in Haneda or Narita airport in Tokyo and ends in Myoko Kogen.

Day 1 (arrival day):
Self-transfer to Hakuba (cost & booking included in price) to where your guide will be waiting to greet you. From there your guide will give you an introduction to the local area, make sure you have everything you need, and deliver you to your hotel for some relaxation before your dream ski trip begins!

Day 2 to 5 (ski/ride Hakuba area):
Goodguides professional mountain guides will decide the best place to ski each day. Your first morning will start with an in-depth avalanche safety briefing and training. This will give you the confidence to use your equipment with the aim of giving you more skills and knowledge to take away with you at the end of the trip.

From here you will potentially ski at any of the 9 resorts within the Hakuba Valley and also other non-ski field access back-country locations, which we do not wish to disclose here!

Day 6 (Transfer to Myoko):
A transfer can often sound like a chore, however a transfer from Hakuba to Myoko with Goodguides is often seen as one of the highlights of the trip. The route is littered with cultural highlights and delicious restaurants tried and tested over years of exploration. Cultural and heritage sites like Nagano’s Zenkoji Temple, famous Japanese artist galleries, snow monkeys, sake tasting and more! We will decide as a group what will work best leading up to the transfer day.

Day 7 to 10 (ski/ride Myoko area):
Again your guides will decide which areas to ski at each day. Options include any of the resorts at Myoko or short trips to Madarao/Tangram and Togakushi amongst other options.

Day 11 (departure day):
Wind up the trip with a free day of skiing and or transfer back the airport or your next destination.
