If you plan to drive up to ski resorts in New Zealand, you will also need to hire snow chains. Whilst is is possible to hire chains in a number of towns near the resorts, our experience has been that you may as well have them for the entire journey for convenience (and it usually works out to be cheaper hiring from the car rental company). The only time I would consider not hiring chains in NZ is if you are only planning on skiing in Queenstown. The road to Coronet Peak is sealed and chains are rarely needed. If you also plan to head to the Remarkables and Cardrona, chains are manditory however you could hire chains locally in Queenstown. 

If you are hiring in the USA, there is no need to hire chains as they are not required. Just be sure that the car you hire has Winter Tread tires

Roof racks are an optional extra and sometimes you will be lucky and find that a vehicle (generally only 4wds) has them even though you didnt request them. If you have a party sharing the vehicle greater than 3 then it would be highly desirable to have roof racks. If there is only 2 of you then you can generally get away with putting skis in the back of the vehicle.

To hire chains and / or roof racks when booking via Oodles, once you receive your booking confirmation by your chosen supplier, visit their website  and edit the booking where you can then add snowchains and / or roof racks..
