Accommodation
On-mountain accommodation at Whakapapa Ski Field consists of members-only club lodges. However there’s plenty of accommodation at Whakapapa Village, National Park Village, and Ohakune.
The accommodation areas are serviced by a shuttle service to transport skiers and boarders to and from the ski area.
Whakapapa Village Accommodation
Whakapapa Village is approximately 6 km (10 minutes) from the ski area, offering a small range of accommodation across the budget spectrum.
Whakapapa Holiday Village is the highest fully serviced campground in New Zealand. It has cabins and sites surrounded by nature, and a self-contained unit with a shower and kitchen and all the usual mod-cons. It also offers dorms.
Skotel Alpine Resort offers superior, standard or backpackers accommodation. Some of the rooms have amazing views of Mt Ngauruhoe, without the price tag usually associated with such splendour.
Finally there’s the
Bayview Chateau Tongariro. It’s a fabulous four-star hotel, steeped in history, with awe-inspiring fittings and oozing class, style and sophistication. See our review of the
Chateau Tongariro for more information.
National Park Accommodation
A little further down the road, but still only 16km away from the ski area’s car park, is National Park Village.
There are various accommodation options in National Park Village. Adventure Lodge and Motel is a motel and bed and breakfast. Plateau Lodge offers simple, cosy and clean accommodation. Howard’s Mountain Lodge is another typical B&B of the area. It offers ski rental and transport. The Park Travellers Lodge is a nice, modern place, offering options from premium double to dorm style bunk rooms.
National Park Hotel is the original inn of the area. It was built by the pioneers, and offers accommodation, both hotel rooms and backpackers.
Other Whakapapa Accommodation
Discovery Lodge has chalets, backpacker accommodation, motel apartments and camping. It’s situated half way between Whakapapa and National Park Village.
There are more lodges further up the road towards Ohakune, and in Ohakune itself of course. See the
Ohakune accommodation page for Turoa for more information, as Ohakune is best suited to skiers and boarders who want to base themselves near the
Turoa ski field.
