Spoil the family to the best accommodation in Wanaka!

16/07/2010

The Grand Mercure Oakridge resort is the best family accommodation in Wanaka.

We stayed in a 1 bedroom apartment. The bedroom was fairly small as it was filled with a gigantic king sized bed however the apartment had a good size separate living area including a full kitchen. There was ample space for the two of us and it would have worked OK with another couple or kids sleeping on the queen sofa bed.

Having internet access in our apartment was very handy although it was via a 3r party service provider and it took a bit of work to get connected.

Amazing facilities – As a guest, you have free unlimited access to the heated rock-pools / hot tubs which is a fabulous (and social) way to end a day of skiing – this was definitely one of the highlights for us.

Restaurants – we weren’t there long enough to try all of the restaurants however we did have one of the most impressive dining experiences ever in the Hub Bar & Restaurant. I had the eye fillet which was to die for and the wine selection and service was up there with the best we have every come across. You must try this restaurant whether you stay at the resort or not.

Location – possibly the only downside f the Oakridge Resort is its location. It is about a 5 min drive into town (I would estimate about 20 mins walk) so for those that like to indulge in a few drinks over dinner a cab may be necessary to get home to bed (cost about NZ$10). This is a little sacrifice given the other benefits of staying at the Oakridge.

Family oriented – there are plenty of things here to keep young ones entertained and they offer babysitting services so the adults can have some time out.

Staff / Service - The most impressive part of this resort was the staff who were full of friendly advice and provided impeccable service.

Exceptional value - The resort caters well to couples and families on holiday, but also for weddings and conferences. The nightly rate is in the “deluxe” region however value for money it is exceptional given the quality of accommodation and huge array of facilities.

The Powderhounds totally enjoyed their experience at the Grand Mercure Oakridge and we gave it a 5 out of 5.
