How To Get There

Where is Marmot Basin?

The Marmot Basin Ski Resort is located in the Jasper National Park, and 21km south of the town of Jasper. Jasper is located in the Alberta Province, although it’s only 26km away from the border with British Columbia. Jasper is 365km southwest of Edmonton and 412km northwest of Calgary.

Jasper is 233km northwest of Lake Louise via Highway 93, and Banff is a further 57km away. The road between Lake Louise and Jasper, the Icefields Parkway, is absolutely spectacular and almost a reason in itself to visit Marmot Basin and Jasper.

Ice Fields Parkway

The Ice Fields Parkway is the incredibly scenic stretch of road (about 230km long) between Lake Louise and Jasper, with the Columbia Icefield being a section not far from Jasper. The Ice Fields Parkway makes the Bow Valley Parkway between Banff and Lake Louise seem a little boring in comparison! The Icefields Parkway road is reasonably wide so it easily affords views of the surrounding rocky peaks, glaciers and enormous valleys. It is absolute eye candy! If you’ve got flexibility with your itinerary, try to time your drive when the weather is fine so that you can get fully snap happy.

During winter, you must have winter tyres on your car or chains as the road is commonly snow covered, and check road conditions before travel. Most of the road is not hilly or windy so it’s an easy drive, but keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. And get a full tank of petrol before you depart.

Getting Between Jasper and Marmot Basin

An inexpensive shuttle bus service runs between Jasper hotels and the ski resort, with 3 schedules in the morning to Marmot Basin and 3 return departures in the afternoon. There are about 10 hotels included on the bus route such as the Crimson Hotel.

Guests of the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge have their own snow shuttle service to Marmot Basin.

Otherwise it’s easy enough to self-drive between Jasper and Marmot Basin, a trip that takes about 20-30 minutes. At the day lodge, there’s no car parking, only a drop off area. The parking is further up the hill so you can ski back to the car at the end of the day. However it’s not quite so easy if you don’t want to go skiing and you just want to sit in the day lodge whilst the kids are out skiing.

Train to Jasper

The rail line, the rail siding and the train station are a major part of the landscape of the town of Jasper, so thankfully there are passenger trains to Jasper and not just freight trains passing through. VIA Rail offer train services to Jasper from Vancouver and Prince Rupert, and there are also trains from Toronto.

The Rocky Mountaineer train service does not run during winter.
