Smithers Ski Hill Overall

Hudson Bay Mountain is amazing for snow quality and traffic through the resort. Even on a saturday morning, the mountain was practically empty with a small line on the Orange T-Bar (Panorama). The runs on this mountain are nice and long, with nice jumps and terrain on the sides. Commute to the mountain is particularly easy, only taking about 30 mins. Though this mountain is a hidden gem, keep in mind that it is in the middle of nowhere. Seriously. The closest city to Smithers is a minimum 4 hour drive, assuming that the roads are perfect. Another setback to this mountain is that the lifts are very limited here. For the majority of the time, (Exception of Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays,) there are only two lifts open; the Orange T-Bar, and the Chair. If you are looking to get lots of full ski days in, this will be difficult as the lifts are substatially slower compared to other mountains. Overall, this mountain is great for people who are looking to go off the beaten track, and potentially try something new.

This is a great family mountain. I have skied in many times with my wife and family and we have never been disappointed. Great snow and a varying level of difficulty. It is not Whistler but for the north of B.C. it is the best ski hill bar none. Reasonable rates and Smithers, B.C. is not far away

A Nice Warm Up For Cat Skiing

19/10/2017
Warm Up
We went skiing at Hudson Bay Mountain Resort as a nice warm up to Skeena Cat Skiing. It’s a lovely little ski hill for the locals and I’d certainly be happy enough if I lived in Smithers and got to ski at Hudson and use it to access the sidecountry and backcountry. However, Hudson Bay is unlikely to attract too many out-of-towners or international visitors considering its remote location, and that there are bigger BC ski resorts with more variety that are easier to access. Of course if you’re in the area for cat skiing or heli skiing, it’s worth popping up to Hudson Bay to check it out.

Major pros of Hudson Bay include the complete lack of crowds, the friendly community vibe, and that lodging, food and skiing/snowboarding is pretty cheap. Obvious cons are the small size of the terrain, the old lifts, and the relatively small volumes of snow.

When we visited, some warm temps had invaded northern BC a few days earlier, so whilst the snow quality was pretty dry in the upper elevations, the snow was disgustingly crusty and icy further down. In the black diamond zone, we were wishing that there was a groomer to bail onto but there wasn’t – yikes!
